Introduction
ThoughtWorks is an innovative systems developer and integrator, a young, selfstyled
company with an aim to “revolutionise the way software is delivered.”
ThoughtWorks’ pioneering approach, which includes industry acclaimed Agile
best practices, helps companies quickly get best value from software applications.
The global client list, across financial services, retailing, leasing and other sectors,
is impressive. Privately US-owned with headquarters in Chicago, ThoughtWorks
has grown quickly to operate in six countries (US, Canada, India, Australia, UK
and more recently, China). Of its 700 employees worldwide, 600 are in feeearning
professional services roles. The UK office has around 155 staff.
Executive Summary
Founded in 1993 in Chicago by Roy Singham, ThoughtWorks originally provided
IT consultancy services for leasing businesses before moving into bespoke
software development. Initially employing starlets from some of America’s top
universities, it was when ThoughtWorks hired its Chief Scientific Officer, Martin
Fowler that it began to attract many other top thought leaders.
In 2004, ThoughtWorks achieved global annual revenues of $85million
($28million in the UK). The company has been profitable year-on-year.
In the UK, the main driver to growth was a major contract with Dixons,
ThoughtWorks’ charter customer. ThoughtWorks built a point-of-sale software
system which helped Dixons to innovate at the till, allowing sales assistants more
time to talk to customers. “We are hugely proud of the value we delivered on the
Dixons system,” says UK Managing Director, Cyndi Mitchell. “Our Agile approach
gave Dixons the opportunity to build a flexible system, one of the major
requirements of the brief.”
