Introduction
Founded in 1995, Siemens Business Services (SBS) has grown into a leading
international player in the IT service market. SBS provides the complete range of
IT services, from consulting through to design, build and support. The company
is also a leading IT outsourcer. SBS is particularly strong in the financial and
public sectors and, through the recent award of the BBC outsourcing contract, in
media and entertainment. With more than 6,000 people in 30 different locations,
SBS is the largest Siemens company in the UK. Worldwide, Siemens operates in
more than 190 countries.
Executive Summary
Turnover for Siemens Business Services (SBS) in the 2004 financial year reached
€4.7bn (approximately £3.65bn). Broadly speaking, Solutions contributes around
11% of sales, Outsourcing (including BPO) 61% and IT support and maintenance
28% although given the bulky nature of contracts, these can change considerably
with new business wins. One half of SBS revenue is generated outside Germany
while Europe as a whole accounts for almost 88% of total turnover. Earnings
before interest and tax in 2004 were £30m. Again, fluctuations can be quite
pronounced, reflecting restructuring and heavy investment in the early life cycle
of new wins.
SBS has recorded some notable new contract wins in the UK over the past 12
months. These include the Office for National Statistics, Transport for London,
Barclays and NS&I. And the BBC signed a 10-year outsourcing contract worth
£2bn for SBS covering both acquisition and outsourcing contracts to deliver
technology services to the BBC.
