Introduction
Elan is Europe’s leading recruitment company for the IT and telecommunications
sectors, providing permanent and contract staff, managed services and training to
10,000 clients around the world. Now owned by the worldwide recruitment
company Manpower, Elan was founded in London in 1987 and from the start
grew quickly. In the 2004 financial year sales hit £500m and the company had 650
employees and over 5,000 contractors (working onsite for other companies). Elan
has won many awards and believes its people, culture and values together with an
innovative approach towards meeting clients’ needs have played a key role in
differentiating it in the market.
Executive Summary
Elan was started in 1987 as a specialist IT recruitment agency and has grown
quickly on the back of the explosion in use of IT in not just all areas of business
but also in the public sector. The NHS, for example, is a key client. Although the
four founder entrepreneurs are no longer with the company, an entrepreneurial
culture still pervades the business. Employees are expected to be dynamic and
innovative and are set challenging and motivating targets.
Elan has been profitable almost from the start and has remained so despite a
growth rate that saw it regularly ranked among the UK’s fastest-growing
companies before its acquisition in 2000 by Manpower. That deal has enabled
Elan to supply clients with non-IT services and use Manpower’s infrastructure to
achieve true synergy, enabling it to provide unique, value-added services for
clients. Like sales, profits have continued to rise – profit forecasting for 2005 is up
47% on 2004.
